Went out of Venice on 3/10 out to a very public spot about 3 miles out of Venice Inlet (7ft  drop for any of you who have taken Kevin’s class). Caught 2 keeper sheepies a hand full of grunts and 2 good size Spanish (16 and 20″) on a free lined hand picked shrimp. The weather wasn’t fantastic but we had a good day on the water. Trolled around the 30 ft mark in the after noon looking for cobia and trolling for kings. Saw 1 king attacking bait on top but he didn’t take.

It was a great trip as we caught fish all day long.  However we did not catch any keeper Red Grouper today.  First stop was hard bottom 67.  Bait everywhere still as I saw last weekend.  I caught blue runners, squirrel fish and spanish sardines( I think) all on sabiki.  I threw them in the cooler for cut and strip baits later.  Got out to around 14-15 miles and action was pretty solid on 16″-18″ RG.  We decided to venture out a little deeper to see if we could get a keeper or two.  We made it to about 75-78′ with no real action so we called it a day.  We wanted to put some fish in the cooler but we were on fish all day and me and my friend pulled up close to 30 fish and at one point having a quad hookup!  The jigs that I had great luck with just last weekend produced maybe 3 fish total all day.  Frozen cut bait and fresh strip bait was the taking of choice by far!  BTW there were weed clumps everywhere!  I kept looking to see some sort of activity under them, tripletail or whatever.  Saw no triple tail, still havent seen one this season!  I did find 2 fish under one clump of weeds not sure what they were but if I had to guess I would say they looked like mullet about 14 miles out.  Anyone have any insight on if they could have been mullet and what they were doing there under the weeds?
